"Citizen Advocates for Whatcom is a grassroots alliance that educates citizens about environmental
public safety issues in their community. The alliance works in partnership with local and state policy
makers, corporate and private landowners, and the general public to insure sensible stewardship and
conservation of our natural resources for future generations." Our current goal is to continue working
with the Department of Natural Resources until we finish a landscape plan for the 15,702 acres of state
trust lands in the Lake Whatcom watershed. We are moving into our fourth year, and hope to have a finalized
plan by fall 2002. We are an information center for the public and we encourage calls from citizens who are
concerned about an environmental issue in their neighborhood. We receive many calls about timber sales in
this region. We have a great rapport with many local and state representatives and agencies, and we direct
the public to the right people who can help them.

We work exclusively with willing landowners to find ways to conserve forever the scenic and
natural values of the land and water. Landowners donate the development rights or full ownership
of their land to the Land Trust. Columbia Land Trust manages the land under a stewardship plan and,
if necessary, will legally defend its conservation values. Columbia Land Trust also identifies priority
conservation lands to purchase. Using financial contributions from private donors, the Land Trust
acquires lands with significant scenic, recreation, or habitat qualities.
Community to Community Development

203 W. Holly, Suite 318
Bellingham, WA 98225
To contribute to the development of a community food system, focusing on equitable food
distribution through gleaning, market retrievals, educational outreach and promoting food
self-reliance choices. Small Potatoes Gleaning Project assists home gardeners in distributing
their excess fruit and vegetables through the Home and Urban Garden Surplus (HUGS) program.
Gardeners can call to make arrangements for a team of volunteers to come and glean for them,
or to obtain information about the locations and delivery hours of food banks and meals programs
in their area. If you are overwhelmed with abundance from your garden, we can help you share your
HUGS with hungry people in our community. We do our best to provide quality produce to those who
otherwise don't have access to fresh, nourishing food. Before calling, ask yourself if it's food
you would eat. Please do not ask us to harvest overripe, or insect ridden fruit.

North Cascades Audubon Society

PO Box 5805
Bellingham, WA 98227-5805
For over 30 years, the North Cascades Audubon Society has represented the interests and
importance of wildlife, habitat and the environment in Whatcom County. Through scientific
research, environmental education, stewardship and advocacy, NCAS provides a variety of services
and opportunities for members and the public to engage with the natural world.
Scientific Research
- NCAS conducts and sponsors local scientific research in order to add to the body of
information about local wildlife and the environment.
- Since 1980, the NCAS Scholarship Program has provided grants for 25 college students who have
completed work on 26 different research projects in the fields of natural history and ecology. In
partnership with the Western Washington University Dept. Biology, student projects have include
species-specific research, assessing impacts to local wildlife populations and habitat from human
activities, water resources, and mapping projects.
- NCAS served as Whatcom County Coordinator for a 5 year, state-wide study of seabird mortality.
NCAS implemented protocol for the study locally, including training of volunteers, establishment
of survey sectors, scheduling and overseeing surveys and reporting of data.
- NCAS provides access for ecological research at its two natural areas, Scudder Pond Wetland
Preserve and Plover Island. A recent project at Scudder Pond tested various types of vegetation
and natural repellents in order to learn what types of plants are the most resistent to the appetites
of beavers. Researchers are trying to determine the most successful plants and methods to use in
revegatation and habitat restoration efforts.
- NCAS plays an active role in field monitoring the health of local wildlife populations and natural
systems.
Environmental Education
Environmental education is associated with virtually every aspect of chapter activities. A
principle focus of the chapter is to provide opportunities for members and the public to better
understand and appreciate wildlife and natural systems.
NCAS Feature Programs
Each month, chapter membership meetings feature a public program or lecture, often
slide-illustrated. Presentations focus on natural history topics and environmental issues, particularly
those which have a bearing locally ( e.g. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Birds and Birdwatching in NW
Washington, Lake Whatcom Watershed Protection, Nest Box Building Seminar).
Field Trips.
NCAS conducts 15-20 field trips annually for birdwatching and nature appreciation. All
trips are led by knowledgeable guides and are free and open to the public. Birdwatching trips
are tailored for every age and level of experience. Many outings take place at some of the regions
premier natural areas.
