GREEN SANCTUARY MEETING, Nov. 11, 2012
Compiled by Barbara A. Ellis-Quinn

Present: Ron Quinn, Barbara Ellis-Quinn, Karen Hamalainen, Rick Dudley and Judith Culver

Announcements: There was minimal information concerning the activities listed below:

GPT EIS Educational Forum on Thursday, Nov. 15th, at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Whatcom Food Network Forum, Monday, Dec. 10th, time and place?

C2C Partnership meeting, Nov. 20th, 5 p.m., place? (We need a have a representative go to this meeting. Any volunteers?).

Green Fire plans (Tuesday, Nov. 13th, 7 pm)

Publicity – as done as it is going to get. Posters have been posted all over Bellingham, Lynden and Ferndale. The movie has also been announced in many online and email lists. Suggestions for next time something like this is done would be to saturate the “market” with posters that are personally delivered and posted by one of us. The smaller posters were more appropriate for most bulletin boards.

Jobs for Tuesday evening: (Arrival time between 5:30 and 6 p.m.)

A. The Culvers will act as greeters at the door directing people to the sanctuary and to restrooms, etc. They will count the number of people who show up. After the video they will be microphone runners during the Q and A session.

B. Ron and Barbara will bring index cards and will get pencils from Cydne for the reflection exercise.

C. There will be a table with books for sale (Sand County Almanac and an Aldo Leopold biography) as well as other materials about the Aldo Leopold Foundation and materials about BUF’s Green Sanctuary Program. Karen will find the GSP info. to display. There will also be a donation basket on the table. Barbara will man the table and be in charge of book sales.

D. Ron will make the announcements and acknowledgments prior to showing the film.

E. Film of ~ 55 minutes length will be shown.

F. Don Burgess, from WWU, will be introduced and then lead the Q and A session for about 15 minutes.

G. Ron will then lead an activity in which participants will be asked to write down what they think they will remember about Aldo Leopold in one year’s time. They will then be asked to find a partner to share their reflections with.

III. GSP Future

Ron presented a potential plan to reorganize the structure of the Green Sanctuary Program in order to allow the program to survive the imminent departure of our superb leaders, Deb and Linda. There does not appear to be one single person who is willing to step up to fill their impossibly large shoes.

First, we need to recruit more people. The Find Your Place at BUF event only generated the interest of one new person. However, there are 38 people listed on the GSP page of the Online Community. We need to get more of these people actively involved in the running of the program since only about 7-8 people show up regularly for the monthly meetings (and Ron and Barbara are snowbirds about to disappear for the winter).

Ron’s vision (in brief):

We need a coordinator who can oversee the work without actually doing all of it. There should be at least three people who are involved in different aspects of the work of the program:

1. Someone in charge of the calendar of activities, both with BUF and in the outside community.

2. Someone in charge of the Adult Forum talks and other interactions with the congregation.

3. Someone in charge of external interactions with the community

Next meeting: Was not scheduled since it was felt that Dec. is a difficult month for meetings and because it was felt that Deb and Linda should be at that meeting.
