Bellingham's Farmer's Market in Fairhaven open Wednesdays at the Village Green from 3-7 pm, through September 30. Ferndale's Farmer's Market has begun and is open on Saturdays & Wednesdays from 9am-3pm through Oct. 25th on Riverwalk (just after the bridge) August 4: "First Gear" Get tips and secrets to make bicycling around town or on trails safe, comfortable and fun. Join RE Sources for another session of Green Drinks Bellingham every first Wednesday of the month from 5-7 pm to connect with other green thinkers, movers and shakers. Tell all your friends and co-workers to come, too! The location has yet to be determined for this particular month so stay tuned for more information or visit the RE Sources website below to get on our email list. Green Drinks is an organic networking session that started in London, England and has since caught fire around the world. Like-minded individuals in places from Hong Kong to India, Sweden to South Africa meet every month to catch-up, network and talk about the latest green issues. According to greendrinks.org, These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. The best part about Green Drinks is that there is no structure, just good people meeting at a regular place and time. Moka Joe proudly uses 100% Certified Organic and Fair Trade coffee beans. Trudy has had the pleasure of traveling to Peru to see some of the farms where Fair Trade Coffee is produced and is happy to answer questions about what it means to use Fair Trade products. We'll have the usual Q&A/discussion time too. Time: 12:00 - 1:00 PM Location: Community Food Co-op, Heathly Connections Building, 1220 N Forest Contact: Amber Dawn Halle August 8-10: Sand in the City Sand Sculpting Festival The event includes a children's area with a giant sandbox, guided tours of the Marine Life Center, and face painting on Saturday and Sunday. Food vendors this year include Rocket Donuts, Diego's Mexican Restaurant, House of Kabobs, Wild West Kettle Corn, the Ferndale Band Boosters, and more. Sand sculptures are available for viewing all three days. Sand in the City is presented by the Northwest Discovery Project and the Port of Bellingham. The event is free and open to the public, however donations are accepted and encouraged. Donations and proceeds support the Marine Life Center, a place where children and adults can learn about and explore the diversity of creatures found in the waters of Puget Sound and the Washington coast. This class’s menu uses ingredients almost entirely from local farmers and producers. Enjoy Roasted Tomato Gazpacho; Crostini with Grilled Apple and Gouda, Chicken Breast Stuffed with Blue Cheese and Sweet Peppers; and Hazelnut Crème Brulée. Part 1 - Water Feature Design - Thursday evening, August 14th, from 7-8:30 pm will include aspects of design, siting, maintenance considerations, and other important aspects of planning for a water feature. Part 2 - Hands-On Installation - Saturday, August 16th, from 10 am - 4 pm will take place at Little Darling School. The installation will give you an opportunity to observe and participate in creating a pondless waterfall and stream feature for the students at this local preschool. Little Darling School is located at 912 W.Illinois Street, immediately north of the Haggen grocery store on Meridian Street, 6 blocks north of Bellingham RE Store. Walk on the ferry and take the shuttle to the festival site, which is at the Marina on Legoe Bay. Learn about how reefnet fishing works, from those who still do it. Learn how to create, preserve, and produce your own seed varieties on your farm or garden. We’ll start in the classroom before heading to the farm (Uprising Organics) for some hands-on learning. We will cover basic seed growing and a variety of improvement skills including timing of planting, ideal population sizes, preventing cross-pollination, selecting for improved varieties, seed maturation and harvest, and seed-cleaning techniques. August 23: RE Store 15 Year Anniversary and SLC Grand Opening The RE Store celebrates its 15 year anniversary in unison with the Grand Opening of the Sustainable Living Center on Saturday, August 23rd, 2008 from 2-5 P.M. The festivities will include live music with the Gallus Brothers, prize drawings, and the RE Golf mini putt-putt course that winds around, up and down throughout the grounds. In addition, the Recycled Art Station will give visitors a chance to make their own art out of RE Store junk. The new SLC will feature an exhibit on climate change, highlighting our new Be Cool campaign to "stop global warming, now" and highlight our other great programs. Come celebrate our successes and our new facility as we create a sustainable world together. It balances public interests with the enhancement and management of natural resources through a unique combination of education, conservation, recreation, and support for local wood-related cottage industries. BMFC promotes modern forest practices, public relations, tourism, and local economic growth in a formerly timber based community. It establishes and supports environmentally sensitive forestry education in the local school systems, and serves as a resource base of forestry information for the general public.
