Amy Gulick, Salmon In The Trees: Life In Alaska's Tongass Rain Forest
Salmon in the Trees tells the remarkable story of the Tongass rain forest, where trees grow salmon, and salmon grow trees. Fringing the coastal panhandle of Alaska and covering thousands of islands in the Alexander Archipelago, the Tongass is one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth. Humpback whales, orcas, and sea lions cruise the forested shorelines. Millions of wild salmon swim upstream into the forest, feeding an abundance of bears and bald eagles. Native cultures and local communities benefit from the gifts of both the forest and sea. But the global demands of our modern world may threaten this great forest’s biological riches. With camera and rain gear in hand, photographer Amy Gulick paddled and trekked among the bears, misty islands, and salmon streams to document the intricate connections within the Tongass. Along the way, she met bush pilots, fishermen, guides, and artists. Together with essays from noted authors, as well as salmon-spawned illustrations by Alaskan artist Ray Troll, Gulick portrays a hopeful story of a national treasure worth preserving.

John Miles, Koma Kulshan and Impressions of the North Cascades
Rising above the northwestern part of the Cascades is the magnificent bulk of Mount Baker - "Koma Kulshan" (the steep white mountain" to the early Nooksack Indians). Long a focal point of human interest, this slumbering volcano has been seen in many different lights--as a sacred object, a great challenge, a stimulus for creativity, a playground. Yet, despite all human actions and aspirations over the years, the mountain retains its majesty, power and mystery. This book is about the story of man and Mount Baker, complete with engaging first hand tales and a wealth of rare photos. Originally published in 1996, Impressions of the North Cascades is a collection of essays, reminiscences, and reflections on Washington State’s North Cascades. Sixteen contributors, ranging from geologists to environmental educators, share their own connections to these awe-inspiring mountains and their surrounding wilderness.

Greg Atkinson, Northwest Essentials: Cooking With Ingredients That Define a Region's Cuisine
"Northwest Essentials" was ahead of its time, emphasizing cooking with the local and regional ingredients available to home cooks -- in this case to those who were blessed to live in the bountiful Pacific Northwest. Originally published ten years ago, it was instantly recognized as a classic. Now that everyone realizes the importance of eating locally and eating in season, the book has been reissued, this time filled with beautiful photographs of the fruits, seafood, mushrooms, lentils, and hazelnuts of the region. But this isn't just a book to make any mouth water; it's a book to cook from -- the recipes are simple, and they work. And the brilliant chef is also a talented writer who lures the reader into each chapter with personal stories and reminiscences. Before Greg Atkinson's public event at Village Books, join him for appetizers prepared from his book and served with wine at the home of Chuck & Dee Robinson, above Village Books. The cost is $40 per person, which includes a copy of the book and a $10 donation to Food Bank Farm. Catered by Chef Charles Claassen. Limited to 40 people.
