June 1: Growing Washington Pancake Breakfast and Showcase
The Grange hosts breakfast and a new farm stand which showcases area farmers.

June 2: First Gear with Everybody Bike teaching team
Get the tips and secrets that make bicycling safe, comfortable and fun for getting around town. Learn communication and positioning skills that make traffic or trail riding easy and stress-free. First Gear, part one of the four-part Full Cycle course, is a great introduction for getting back on the bike or a refresher for those already biking

June 3: Underwater Life in the Pacific Northwest
Photojournalist Barb Roy presents a virtual underwater excursion into the watery realm of our Northwest emerald paradise, to show firsthand what a scuba diver sees. Marine critters, cold water coral, and face-to-face views of six-foot wolf eels will be included. Barb Roy is a freelance travel writer living in Vancouver, Canada. Her work has appeared in various dive publications including Sport Diver, X-Ray International Dive (on-line), Northwest Dive News, Wavelength, and Wreck Diver. This event is cosponsored by Village Books.

June 4: Green Drinks Bellingham!
Join RE Sources for another session of Green Drinks Bellingham every first Wednesday of the month from 5-7 pm to connect with other green thinkers, movers and shakers. Tell all your friends and co-workers to come, too! The location has yet to be determined for this particular month so stay tuned for more information or visit the RE Sources website below to get on our email list. Green Drinks is an organic networking session that started in London, England and has since caught fire around the world. Like-minded individuals in places from Hong Kong to India, Sweden to South Africa meet every month to catch-up, network and talk about the latest green issues. According to greendrinks.org, These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. The best part about Green Drinks is that there is no structure, just good people meeting at a regular place and time. June 7: Sea Vegetable Harvest with Ryan Drum, PhD
Ryan Drum returns to Bellingham to lead a seaweed safari! The class will learn to identify delectable sea vegetables and how to harvest them in environmentally friendly fashion. Along the way, Ryan will entertain us with seaweed anecdotes and more. Bring rubber boots, a bucket, and a cheap pair of stainless steel scissors. Note: It is necessary to obtain a shellfish-harvesting license before class--available at sporting goods stores for $ 11.

"Earth needs humans to figure out our shared destiny, says Alan Seid, whose interest is both the outer and inner dimensions of sustainability. Outside there's ecology, social systems and economics (e.g., in Permaculture). Inside is the psychological dimension of personal and group values and intentions. How do we meet people where they are, engender respect, promote crucial information-sharing, and motivate change?" From the tallest tree to the deepest root, medicinal plants are all around us. Join us as we identify dozens of native plants, including nettles, Oregon grape, hawthorn, willow, wild mustards and ferns. Learn medicinal and culinary benefits, ethno botany, ethical harvesting methods and applications. Find out when to harvest each plant for optimum vitality, potency and nutrition. June 11 - 23: Permaculture Design Course
Learn to work with Nature and design sustainable systems for human settlements. Permaculture is an interdisciplinary science that combines biology and ecology with architecture, landscape design, and organic agriculture. Students will learn how to create permaculture designs that can be applied to everything from backyards, to farms, to houses and cities. Featuring experienced Permaculture instructors such as Marisha Auerbach, Kelda Miller, Michael Pillarski, David Sansone, David Zhang, Bruce Horowitz, and many others. Course includes lessons on soil ecology, native plants, wetland restoration, fungus propagation, land management, organic farming, rainwater harvesting, natural building, graywater systems, alternative energy, site analysis, design methodology, community planning, emergency preparedness, local economics, and more! Includes delicious organic meals, beautiful places to camp, over 100 hours of education, and a Permaculture Design certificate

June 24: The Willows Inn: Farm to Table Summer Feas
Instructor and chef Carig Miller leads a tour of an organic farm and then returns to the inn to teach how to prepare reefnet salmon and dill ceviche, oysters on a summer salad, Lummi Island braised beef and creme brulee.

June 25: MARK KURLANSKY, THE LAST FISH TALE
Mark Kurlansky worked on a commercial fishing boat at the age of 17 in his native New England. In his new book, The Last Fish Tale, he explores this unique coastal culture, arguing that while bio-diversity, a wide range of species, must be maintained for a healthy environment, what he calls socio-diversity, a wide range of cultures, must also be preserved for a healthy civilization. Most recently, Mark Kurlansky published the national bestseller, The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell, for which he won the 2006 Bon Appetit Food Writer of the Year Award; Nonviolence: Twenty-five Lessons from the History of a Dangerous Idea, winner of the 2007 Dayton Literary Peace Prize and his first novel, Boogaloo on 2nd Avenue. His unique culinary explorations include the New York Times bestselling books Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World, which received the James Beard Award for Excellence in Food Writing, and Salt: A World History, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. June 26: Robert Kennedy Jr. Luncheon
Robert Kennedy, Jr. will be the featured speaker at a luncheon to benefit RE Sources North Sound Baykeeper on Saturday, June 26that the Hotel Bellwether Ballroom. An international spokesperson for the Waterkeeper Alliance and attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, Mr. Kennedy will discuss local and regional clean water issues and highlight the work of RE Sources North Sound Baykeeper, Wendy Steffensen. There will be a special opportunity for attendees business meet and greet Mr. Kennedy after the luncheon. A salmon lunch will be served at noon. There will also be a chance for luncheon guests to participate in the Clean Water Auction to help raise funds for RE Sources North Sound Baykeeper program. The primary sponsors for this event are Sanitary Service Company, Barron Heating Green Team and DreamMakers Northwest. June 28: NSEA's Salmon at the Bay Art Show & BBQ
Come celebrate the common waters connecting salmon and people at NSEA's 6th Annual Salmon at the Bay Art Show and BBQ! This year the Salmon at the Bay Art Show will feature original artwork by Laurie Potter and more than 50 additional local artists. Held in the Boundary Bay Brewery beer garden, a salmon burger lunch served from 11:00am -2:00pm will be followed by a delicious salmon dinner starting at 5:00pm with live music.

June 30 - July 2: OWL ART & OWL SCIENCE: AGES 7 TO 12
Artist and teacher Kelly Sobanski presents a drawing workshop with the Museum's collection of owls for inspiration. Students will use drawing kits (which they will be able to keep) to create drawings in black and white, pastel, colored pencil, and crayon. These will be matted and can be printed as cards. Students will also have the opportunity to create owl sculptures. Come join the fun and be inspired to create owl designs that capture the essence of these amazing creatures. All materials included. Registration opens May 11 and closes June 25. Register through Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department office at 3424 Meridian Street or by credit card over the phone.
