World Oceans Day
The concept for World Oceans Day was proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and it had been unofficially celebrated every year since then. Official designation by the U.N. is a significant step in conserving and protecting our world's ocean. World Oceans Day provides an opportunity each year to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. The Ocean Project, working closely with the World Ocean Network each year, helps to coordinate events and activities with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools, businesses. As of 2009, "World Oceans Day" has been officially declared by the United Nations as June 8th each year!

Salal: Listening to the Northwest Understory
WA Native Plant Society--Koma Kulshan Chapter presents Dr. Laurie Ricou, as he tells stories about his travels in search of salal and writing an “affectionate biography” of this commonplace northwest native plant. The program will feature information about his recent book Salal: Listening to the Northwest Understory, featuring interviews, commentary, and research about salal’s critically important role in forest ecosystems, how salal is used, what it means to northwest writers and artists, and profiles the salal industry in the Pacific Northwest. Ricou’s work shows how salal transcends the artificial divide between nature and culture, ecology and the marketplace. Dr. Laurie Ricou is a Professor of English at the University of British Columbia. He is the former President of the Western Literature Association and editor of the journal Canadian Literature. He wrote The Arbutus/Madrone Files: Reading the Pacific Northwest and is currently working on a new book, Invader Species, examining what role invasive species play in Pacific Northwest environments.

Why Transition Whatcom?
We believe that the dual crises of global climate change and peak oil are going to profoundly impact our lives and our communities. Climate change requires that we choose to quickly and dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Peak oil, which will result in much more expensive and thus reduced energy supply, will soon force us to use much less energy. Transition Whatcom will work with our neighbors in all Whatcom County communities to catalyze local efforts to build greater local-self reliance in terms of food, transportation, winter heating, and medical care — and to build a positive life beyond oil. Come to this session to learn more about peak oil, global climate change, and Transition Whatcom.

Peter Laufer, The Dangerous World of Butterflies: The Starling Subculture of Criminals, Collectors, and Conservationists
War weary after writing a book about Iraq, Peter Laufer joked to an audience (right here at Village Books!) that his next book would be about butterflies. The result: an invitation to a Nicaraguan butterfly preserve and a book that covers not only the beauty and magic of butterflies, but also takes unpredictable turns into the high-stakes realms of organized crime, ecological devastation, species depletion, natural history museum integrity, and chaos theory. Set in locales throughout the Americas and beyond, this fascinating book takes us into a behind-the-scenes world sure to alter our view of butterflies forever.
