May 1: A Conservation Strategy for the 21st Century John Lombard offers a practical proposal to conserve the region's most important ecosystems
in the face of long-term population growth. Saving Puget Sound (U of WA Press) provides a detailed review of the political and legal issues that must be at the

May 3: Sea level Rise: Effects and Policy Considerations in Washington State. The Whatcom County Marine Resources Committee will host a free
presentation and panel discussion on sea level rise in Puget Sound. Douglas J. Canning, from UW's Climate Impacts Group, will address the potential consequences
of sea level rise including: inundation and flooding, coastal erosion, sea water intrusion, and habitat disturbance. Canning's work uses models to predict the
effects of sea level rise at various heights or scenarios and at different locations throughout Puget Sound. He will also address the role of sea level rise in

May 6-12: International Composting Week. Across the United States and Canada, composting advocates will be encouraging everyone to Compost.
May 14-18: Bear Awareness Week as promoted by Conservation Northwest.
May 15: David Korten, author of The Great Turning : From Empire to Earth Community will be in Bellingham conducting workshops on his book. First

May 15: Bike to Work and School Day. Thousands of Bellingham and Whatcom County commuters will hit the road on two wheels and their own two feet to
celebrate the area's 10th Annual Bike to Work and School Day.
May 19; Saturday: Our own "New To You Sale," BUF's annual "resuse and recycle" event.
May 22: International Day For Biological Diversity. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity is pleased to announce the focus of the 2007
International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) will be on "Biodiversity and Climate Change."
