DAVID MAS MASUMOTO, WISDOM OF THE LAST FARMER: HARVESTING LEGACIES FROM THE LAND
Hailed by The New York Times as a poet of farming, Slow Food activist Masumoto weaves together stories of family and farming, life and death, to reveal age-old wisdom that is fast disappearing-- and urgently needed. This is a graceful meditation on the work of growing food and its meaning across generations. Masumoto -- an organic farmer working the land in California's Central Valley -- farms stories as he farms peaches. In Wisdom of the Last Farmer, an impassioned memoir of revitalization and redemption, he finds the natural connections between generation and succession, fathers and children, booms and declines as he tells the story of his family and their farm. He brings us to the rich earth of America's Fruit Basket, under the vine trellises and canes where grapes are grown, and to the fruit orchards flush with green before harvest, where he uncovers and preserves the age-old wisdom that is fast disappearing in our modern, information-driven world -- and that is urgently needed in this time of food crises and social disruption. In the quiet eloquence of Wisdom of the Last Farmer, you will see how your own destiny is involved in the future of your food, the land, and the farm. David Mas Masumoto is the author of Harvest Son and Epitaph for a Peach. His organic farm is in Del Rey, CA. Co-sponsored by Village Books, Sustainable Connections and the Community Food Co-op

GORDON HEMPTON, ONE SQUARE INCH OF SILENCE: ONE MAN'S SEARCH FOR NATURAL SILENCE IN A NOISY WORLD
Washington State is home to the only non-tropical rain forest in the northern hemisphere—in part of Olympic National Park. Here, in arguably the quietest place in the country, One Square Inch is physically located. Marked by a small red stone sitting on a log, a location that Emmy Award-winning sound ecologist Gordon Hempton hopes to protect from noise pollution along with a much larger area of the park. When his One Square Inch initiative became increasingly threatened by manmade noise, Hempton decided to take a cross-country journey from Washington State to Washington, DC, in his ‘64 VW bus, seeking out the sounds of our nation’s natural habitats and reconnecting with the land. Alarmingly, he found that natural silence can only be found in fewer than a dozen remote locations. This the incredible tale of a man on a singular mission to preserve natural silence from the steady spread of man-made noise.

LANGDON COOK, FAT OF THE LAND: ADVENTURES OF A 21ST CENTURY FORAGER
Langdon Cook learned the hard way. You can’t impress a potential mate by claiming a homemade “Egg McMuffin” as part of your culinary cadre. He’s mended his ways, and has as a master forager, he crafts delicious dishes from wild nettles, freshly dug clams, a variety of berries, mushrooms and crab. Through trial and error, and years spent experimenting, Cook finds the literal “fruits” of his labors both nutritious and rewarding—especially when he’s spent the better part of a day in pursuit of a meal. Fat of the Land describes foraging, not as a throwback to our hunter-gatherer past, but as a way to reconnect with the landscape, and appreciate the bounties of the water and earth around us. Structured around the seasons of the year, each chapter focuses on a specific food type and concludes with a recipe featuring the author’s hard-won bounty, a savory stop to each adventure-filled morsel.

BRENDA HILLMAN, PRACTICAL WATER -- POETRY!
Practical Water is both an elemental meditation and an ecopoetics focusing on water: Taoist water, water from the muses’ fountains, the practical waters of hydrology from which we draw our being. Here also are twinned lyrics for the moon, governess of tides and night vision, as the poet explores matters of spirit, our political life, and earthly fate. No one is reimagining the possibilities of lyric poetry with more intelligence and invention than Brenda Hillman. NICK JANS, THE GLACIER WOLF: TRUE STORIES OF LIFE IN SOUTHEAST ALASKA
In this new collection of personal essays, Nick Jans explores the rain forests and tidal fiords of Southeast Alaska, where he’s lived for the past 10 of his 30 Alaska years. Part a chronicle of personal discovery, and part story of this mountain-and-glacier-rimmed seascape, the book is ultimately about the wildlife and people making their homes there. The truly remarkable story of Romeo, Juneau’s “celebrity” black wolf, is the central strand around which the rest of the book is woven. Stories of wildlife encounters combine you-are-there personal experience with informative natural history, human bonding with injured or orphan wild creatures, tales of adventure and wilderness travel, along with pieces that describe the flavor of everyday life. On this journey, Jans invites longtime Alaskans to first-time visitors; armchair or wilderness travelers; animal lovers; and folks who just love a good story told in a conversational, reader-friendly, yet carefully crafted voice.
