South Fork Community Forest Initiative 3231 Hillside Road Deming, WA 98244 southforkcommunityforest@gmail.com http://southforkforest.org/ (under construction) South Fork Community Forest Initiative is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Whatcom County. We are dedicated to promoting sustainable forestry practices and raising awareness about the harmful effects of clear-cutting. Clear-cutting is still widely practiced in Whatcom County. When it is done on steep slopes, it creates landslides that damages roads and rural properties. We are currently trying to buy forest land in Whatcom County to put into a land trust. Instead of clear-cutting, our forests will be selectively harvested and maintained for high quality timber production and wildlife habitat. We want to secure a sustainable source of timber for local residents, as well as jobs for loggers and foresters, for generations to come. Public interest and involvement is currently being solicited in a series of presentations and discussions with interested governmental, neighborhood, and community groups. Your ideas and suggestions are welcome! A park district functions like your fire or water district but with a mission of serving the community as an advocate for essential conservation and recreation uses and opportunities not being provided through other means within the district. It is not just another park, nor is the intent to make the whole district one big park.
