Sunday Service, November 1

10:30 AM | Sanctuary & Zoom

Joy, Prosperity, Love & Light:

Celebrating Diwali

Rev. Sunny McMillan, worship leader, with Debu Majumdar and Rebekah Paci-Green

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, serves as the culmination of a monthlong celebration of religious festivals in and around South Asia and its diaspora. In recognition of our Unitarian Universalist shared value of pluralism, and in appreciation of this cherished Hindu festival, we will honor Diwali by participating in some of its rituals and exploring what it means for us here as people and as a country. And because sweets and fried, crunchy, salty snacks are an integral part of Diwali, please do bring some if you are able for our Coffee Hour following the service!

Last Saturday was a busy day around BUF.  From Choir Sectionals, to a Pathways for Newcomers class, to decorating the Sanctuary for the Sunday service, to a Witches Dance, to an Open-Mic Night, there were folks coming and going all day.

I myself joined the Pathways class for a bit, where I shared in some wonderful discussion with the nine people who attended (it was a great group—many thanks to Felice Davis and Ellen Berning for facilitating the class!).  I then headed down to my office to sort and organize the ~1,000 pieces of candy I'd purchased for Candy Communion on Sunday (see the attached photo for the full pile of candy before it was sorted into buckets—it was quite a haul!).

I first heard the idea for a Candy Communion from a colleague, and I thought it would fit perfectly in our Sunday service centered around this very special time of year—the time of Samhain, All Saints, Halloween, and Dia de los Muertos, when the veil between worlds is said to be thin.  In fact, the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain is still celebrated today as Halloween—a holiday where the costumes and candy often get the most attention.  But look beneath the surface of the shiny costumes and bright candy wrappers, and you'll find a holiday of community with its largest ritual—trick or treating—connecting us with our neighbors and local neighborhoods, where we give and receive the gift of candy.  As Rev. Ana Levy-Lyons describes it:

"The candy is just a currency backed by the gold of face-to-face human connection. Its sweetness is the sweetness of the nurturing love of the whole village. The exchange of this currency–household to household, adult to child, child to child–is a kind of secular communion. We give, we receive, we trust, we participate…it’s those connections, it’s that communion between people that we celebrate on Halloween."

So, we celebrated this form of communion on Sunday, blessing the candy, and inviting our children and youth to share it with those in the pews, then receiving some for themselves.  It was beautiful and chaotic and meaningful and fun.  It is a tradition I hope we return to in future years.

Whether you celebrate this weekend in ancient Samhain or modern Halloween ways, may you find the sweetness of community and connection.

You’re Invited: Whatcom Revival — An Afternoon of Faith, Music & Community

Saturday, October 31 | 1:00–4:00 PM
Maritime Heritage Park, Bellingham

Organized by Joel Johnson and Micah Johnson

On Saturday, October 31, from 1:00–4:00 PM, members and friends of BUF and our wider community are invited to gather for the Whatcom Revival at Maritime Heritage Park in downtown Bellingham.

Our theme is drawn from Isaiah 58:13, which calls us on the Sabbath to turn away from simply “going your own ways” and pursuing our own interests. Earlier in the same chapter, Isaiah gives us a powerful picture of what turning toward others can look like: loosening the bonds of injustice, sharing bread with the hungry, bringing the homeless poor into our homes, and caring for our neighbors.

That is the spirit of the Whatcom Revival. We are intentionally going to a place where pain, homelessness, addiction, loneliness, and hardship often congregate and asking what it means for people of faith to create a space there filled with love, joy, music, fellowship, dignity, and hope.

The afternoon will include a family sing-along and live music performed by Micah Johnson and Joel Johnson, featuring familiar and uplifting songs including Joyful, Joyful, Father Can You Hear Me, Blessed & Highly Favored, and more.

This is a Christian-rooted, interfaith community gathering. People of every faith tradition, people who are questioning, and people with no particular faith tradition are welcome. There is nothing you need to bring. Simply come as you are and join us.

Saturday, October 31 | 1:00–4:00 PM

Maritime Heritage Park, Bellingham

Come sing with us, meet your neighbors, and help create a space of joy, dignity, belonging, and hope in the heart of our community.

It’s almost time! Our annual fundraiser auction is less than two weeks away! Here’s the latest information:

• The auction event is sold out! Tickets will NOT be available at the door so please do not show up hoping to attend; we will have to sadly turn you away. But good news: you can still participate in the online auction, raffle, and paddle call fundraiser!

• Purchase your raffle tickets! 1 for $5 or 3 for $10. This year’s raffle is all online, so you don’t need to be present to win - you don’t even need to be present to purchase raffle tickets!

• We could still use a few more volunteers for decorating on Friday 11/6 from 10-12.

• And, most importantly, the bidding is open NOW and will pause on November 4th. If you want a guarantee of winning the items you have your eye on, the best option will be to "buy it now."

Help Reduce the Roar in the Social Hall

A Note from the Board about the Paddle Call for the Auction on November 7th

Every year at the BUF Auction, money is raised during “the Paddle Call” for a specific project that has been chosen by the BUF Board. This year, the Paddle Call will attempt to raise funds to cover professionally installed sound dampening panels in the Social Hall, which will cost about $21,000. This amount is well above the traditional $10,000 ceiling for Paddle Call projects. Accordingly, we have set the goal of raising $21,000; however, if we do not reach that goal, then any funds raised will be put into BUF’s Building Maintenance Reserve fund, which was depleted due to the recent roofing work completed this summer, and will need to be built back up to cover additional roofing repairs in the near future.  Questions?  Email Board members Tom Nicholas or Natalie Johnson (email address in the Breeze directory), or Rev. Sunny at BUFminister@buf.org.

You can donate now to reduce the roar in the Social Hall at the the BUF Auction website at by clicking HERE. Thank you!

Linda Clark, a member of BUF for many years, was a wonderful friend and an inspiration to us all.  Despite having lost a leg in a childhood accident, Linda managed her life quite well even maneuvering cheerfully through the snow at times. She wasn't afraid to laugh at herself.  Since she was very committed to her family she moved from Portland to Bellingham to support her daughter and granddaughters. She was a career teacher and a beloved member of BUF for many years, helping to organize "Dining With Friends," and belonging to a Chalice Circle. She loved sea kayaking, painting and playing the mandolin. She was devoted to her longtime companion, Lynn. Those who were close to Linda knew her as a caring, considerate and cheerful human being. She was always positive and she had a way of making everyone around her feel good. She will be greatly missed.

Paul Tossetti, a friend of BUF and spouse of Carola Tossetti, breathed his last breath on September 23, 2026, at the Whatcom Hospice House. This past spring he had retired and moved to Bellingham from Dallas, TX. The mountains, shorelines, good food and precious friendships made for a relaxing, sweet summer, before succumbing to health issues. Paul had been a strong supporter of the Humanitas program for several years.

A Humanitas Story

It's hard being a young gay man in a community where being gay is considered a sin. It's especially hard when your own family buys into that theory. The pain goes very deep.

When conditions became intolerable, Scott, a quiet, sensitive young gay man, packed a few belongings, hopped on a bus, and moved across the country leaving his family behind. He aimed for the Pacific Northwest  because he had heard that people are more tolerant here.

Scott likes Bellingham and feels that we are a welcoming community (his words.) For the first time he feels that it is okay to be who he really is. He feels safer here but not completely safe since his phone was stolen at the bus station and he needs the phone to find a job and housing. He is currently staying at the Lighthouse Mission but he is very anxious to find work.

We gave him bus passes and helped him purchase a phone. We told him we were glad that he picked Bellingham. In his quiet way Scott said he was grateful to everyone at Humanitas. I think that translates to everyone at BUF.

Uplift, BUFs LGBTQNB2SASAR+ and Allies group will have our first Sunday of the month meeting this week, on November 1st.

This time we are meeting at Mod Pizza in Barkley Village at 12:30 rather than having our usual Board Room meeting. All who come with good intent are welcome to join us for a buy-your-own lunch of pizza, salads, and beverages (including beer and wine.)

Mod Pizza is located at 2925 Newmarket St, in Barkley Village near the Haggen on Woburn Street. Their email address is modpizza.com.

In the Spirit of Right & Respectful Relations

Dear Friends, I’m sharing Lummi, Jay Julius’ gracious response to our invitation to the following book at our Sunday, Oct 11 service. With synchronicities and availability, Jay agreed to come. Those attending witnessed an honest and heartfelt engagement with those attending. Because the recording online was edited for copyright and time, it lost the continuity and the flow of the morning.

Click Here to read a transcript with links of the 10.11.26 Service: In the Spirit of Right Respect & Relations

Click Here to read transcript of Jay Julius’ message during the Sunday, October 11, Service.

I hope you will read the Chalice Lighting we chose from the book, not realizing that Richard Solomon was a beloved mentor of Jays, who lived with him in the last months of his life.

Nor did we know that the video of Salmon Woman story was a story totem pole, carved by Jewell James that contained Salmon Woman, salmon, and the bear that Jay later called into his talk.

Nor did we know that the video of Dana Lyons singing “The Salmon Come Home Again and Again” would lead Jay to weigh into it visually, because he said all those pictured, salmon, bear, orca, trees, water, WORKED TOGETHER to create and care for the world we live in.

He talked about place-based culture, and about obligations to nature made in times immemorial. His messages hit home and unlike any other presenter there was a standing ovation.

Speaking of place-based lives, he told us that he was leaving the next day to go to Scotland, the islands and the wild environment of another place-based culture. He went there to get far away from the trauma and noise we are all facing now. We hope he is finding PEACE and BREATH in this intermission. We are grateful that he made time to speak truth, and gratitude.

Last, the transcription allows you to stop and focus on points Jay made as he spoke that go by so fast if you just watch the recorded share.

UUA Statement Regarding DC Court Decision on Mennonite Church USA v. U.S. Department of Homeland Security Lawsuit

October 20, 2026

The Unitarian Universalist Association welcomes the decision by the the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, which means that the Mennonite Church USA v. U.S. Department of Homeland Security suit can move forward. We were pleased to join a multifaith coalition last year in becoming a plaintiff in this case. Since then, we have seen how this administration has violated the rights of people of faith in various ways, including no longer protecting our sacred places.

As the threats to our sanctuaries – including documented instances of surveillance of UU congregations — and religious practices intensify, we will continue our practice of faithful dissent against such oppression, and we look forward to being a part of the next step of the legal process.

Reading the Ramayana Before Seeing the Movie

We will have a Zoom book group discussion of the Ramayana every Thursday at 8 PM for an hour. Our first meeting will begin on October 15. No previous notice is required. Just follow the Zoom link on the homepage at buf.org and use the password BUF.

All Hindu Indians learn the story from childhood, but very few Americans have the name of the epic or its hero, Rama. It is the story behind Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

As India becomes more connected to the global world, both as a people and for commercial reasons, it is necessary to recognize the values that drive its people. Those values come from this epic. So, it is extremely relevant now that we at this spiritual institution understand the sacred text of the Hindus.

Please contact Debu at tbw@buf.org with any questions.

Singing Resistance

Every Wednesday, starting at 4:30 pm

Sanctuary

Beginning September 2nd, BUF Singing Resistance will return to meeting at 4:30 on Wednesday afternoons in the sanctuary. All are welcome to our practices and events, as we develop a community of singers ready to hit the streets on short notice or to show up to events with songs of community, outrage and hope. This is not about singing ability or experience. It is not about performance. It is about joining with our neighbors and letting everyone in earshot know that “Our love for each other will conquer hate."

Stop the Pacific Link Pipeline!!

Canada has designated the Pacific Link Pipeline as a “project of national interest”. The proposal would move one million barrels of tar sands crude oil per day to a massive new export terminal at Roberts Bank, just north of the U.S.–Canada border, and use Very Large Crude Carriers - supertankers - to export the oil through the Salish Sea.

Roberts Bank terminal is a 50-minute drive from here and the supertanker traffic will pass by within a few miles of our coast. Tribes up and down the coast, including Lummi Nation have opposed this pipeline and the supertanker traffic it will bring to our waters.

Vessel traffic studies since 2015 have repeatedly warned against supertanker traffic adverse impacts on our environment, including that of our salmon and Southern Resident Orcas. There are extreme issues with major spills, air pollution, water contamination, impact on endangered and sensitive species, noise, vessel safety, impacts to local tourism and recreational economies and so much more. Governor Ferguson and Director Sixkiller (WA Dept of Ecology) have responded in disappointment.

Sign the petition here and pass it along to friends and families: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/oppose-the-pacific-link-pipeline-and-supertankers-to-protect-washington-state/

All hands on deck to oppose S.5653.  “Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026’

It’s recommended to submit your letters by October 23, 2026; however, get it in when you can even if it’s after the 23rd.

It’s expected that a cloture vote on the motion to proceed will be held on November 9th when Congress returns to session. A cloture vote ends a filibuster and forces a final vote on the bill. Please write to your Senators as soon as possible and ask them to oppose this bill.

S.5653.  “Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026’: https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/5653

There is so much wrong with this bill. The focal opposition points include continued gutting of the National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act and the National Historical Preservation Act. Unfortunately, they included provisions that make the clean energy industry align themselves with the fossil fuel and extractive industries in supporting the bill.

Besides gutting the laws listed above, the bill is a permit reform bill that will

• Reduce or eliminate public participation in comment and scoping sessions.

• Limits what is subject to environment reviews and then limits the scope of environmental reviews performed.

• Reduce or eliminate Tribal consultations. Restrict judicial reviews (lawsuits) and changes statute of limitations from 6 years to 150 days.

• Accelerate and expedite fossil fuel, mining, data center, and other “major infrastructure” permitting - strongly favors industry over conservation.

• Bars future agencies revoking projects that are already approved.

• Changes definitions of “harm” and “adverse impacts.”

• Allows projects to continue even when in the judicial review process.

• Allows contractors to sue the government and receive awards 50-100% of the project cost

• Restricts submission of research and use of and redefines “best available science.”Turns over responsibility of ESA projects to States who are either hostile or lack resources and expertise to comply.

And this is only the tip of the iceberg. . .

In the National Historical Preservation Act the major point here is the rewrite of Section 106, which the Tribes/Nations rely on heavily to protect sacred sites and assert Tribal sovereignty and rights. Here are two references coming from Tribal sources concerning the rewrite of Section 106 in the S.5653 bill:

Here’s another:  https://natlawreview.com/press-releases/historic-preservation-laws-60th-anniversary-1000-organizations-launch. There still is the opportunity for other organizations to sign on.  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1a93Qn46N7yEQIp12JvjVxOAAKGMeG4wLQgJIdY8S7P8/viewform?edit_requested=true

A Broad Tribal Coalition Urges Congress to Withdraw BAAJA’s Section 106 Rewrite, Wenona Singel, Turtle Talk, October 13, 2026, https://turtletalk.blog/2026/10/13/a-broad-tribal-coalition-urges-congress-to-withdraw-baajas-section-106-rewrite includes the National Congress of American Indians and the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians

I’m trying to put together a document with some background and talking points for writing letters to congress people. I will share the link, but y’all have to understand that this is a work in progress and it’s very complicated. You can use whatever is there and there are several articles that you can review to get more details and there are a lot of them:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lVBTrDZRIobEf9Zc-h-zUJSobYb9dWp3_kk6F2g_y7M/edit?usp=sharing

Staying Healthy this Fall and Winter

Virus season is in full swing, and we are aware of a confirmed case of COVID within the congregation.

Please help prevent the spread of illness:

•     Update your immunizations for flu and COVID and consider getting the RSV vaccine if you haven’t already done so.

•     Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds after using the bathroom, before touching food, and as often as possible.

•     Use hand sanitizer frequently. Assume everyone you touch is ill and assume everything you touch has been touched by someone ill. Consider keeping sanitizer in your car, purse, or pocket.

•     Please stay home if you have a runny nose, cough, sneezing, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or have been exposed to someone who is ill.

If you have been sick recently, please wear a mask if you come to BUF, erring on the side of safety.

Back-up masks are available in the Lobby, and hand sanitizer is available throughout the building.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in keeping our congregation and staff healthy!
