UU congregations often speak of building "Beloved Community," a term coined by theologian Josiah Royce, and later popularized by MLK, Jr. In fact, BUF created its own Covenant of Beloved Community in 2020. But the journey to building such anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and multicultural community is long and bumpy—as one congregant at UU Church Annapolis said, "it's stumbling in the right direction." Today, we'll look at some of the mistakes and miracles that can happen on the journey, as well as the UUA's new MOSAIC framework for helping congregations build Beloved Community.
