Justice is at the core of our faith. Our congregations are called to make a positive difference in our wider communities. We work to serve, to raise awareness, and to support and partner with people who face injustice. We advocate, organize, and act for justice to live out the values of our faith.

Social and Environmental Justice

We, the BUF Social and Environmental Justice Committee (SEJC), affirm and promote peace, justice and equality through action, education and raising awareness within our community and the wider world.

We act through Ministry Action Teams (groups of at least 5 members addressing a particular justice issue for which they have a strong passion) as well as through Project Teams and Partnerships. The full committee meets three times each year; our next meetings are scheduled for April 26, 2026 and September 27, 2026. Minutes and reports are available here.

For requests of the SEJC between meetings (co-sponsorships, funds, volunteers, etc.), please complete the SEJC Request Form, which will be reviewed by our executive team.

To join the SEJC mailing list, send an email to socialjusticecommittee+subscribe@buf.org. Include a short description of your involvement with BUF, your interest in the SEJC, and your name.

We, a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying towards spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse, multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.

We acknowledge the land is the territory of the Lummi and Nooksack Peoples. Their presence is imbued in these mountains, valleys, waterways, and shorelines. May we nurture our relationship with our Coast Salish neighbors and the shared responsibilities to their homelands, where we all reside today.

Ministry Action Teams

Black Lives Matter

We harness the power of love to dismantle racism, white supremacy and other forms of oppression, within ourselves and across our communities, creating safe spaces inclusive of people of all races, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds.

Environmental Justice

We strive to restore, protect and preserve the land, air and water and the human and natural communities that make up a delicate and intricate web of existence and center the needs and perspectives of impacted communities, drawing upon their wisdom and leadership to create the needed change.

Humanitas

Humanitas is a weekly alms program with the Community Resource Network, reaching out to local citizens who are struggling to rebuild lives turned upside down as a result of an unfortunate decision or circumstances beyond their control.

Immigrant Rights

We work with allies and partners, secular and non-secular, to welcome and ensure safety, justice and equity for immigrants, migrant workers, asylum seekers and others who are, or are seeking to be, a part of our community.

Native American Connections

The Native American Connections Committee (NACC) is a Ministry Action Team that works to support, honor, appreciate, and work cooperatively with Indigenous peoples locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

We welcome and provide support to refugee families, helping the them to find stable housing and employment, access to medical care, school enrollment, language training, literacy tutoring, and other needs as they are identified.

“We envision a world of peace, justice, equality and equity; where honor, respect and the right to existence and to flourish is afforded to all beings and the Earth.”
